The effective use of hashtags in social media can drastically increase your online success.

Social Media and Hashtags

Hashtags Increase Social Media Success!

If you have been around social media for any length of time, you will find that many people today are using hashtags for Twitter, as well as other networking sites. Twitter is still the leader of the hashtags though, and if you are on that site, then you need to learn to use them properly.

One of the nice things about using WordPress templates is the fact that you are now able to embed Twitter posts right into the content on your site. If you are doing so, you could find that the hashtags you use on your Twitter account can show up on your site and give you a little bit of an SEO boost. It can be a good way to “marry” your blog and your Twitter account.

Wait… What’s a Hashtag and How Does It Help?

Those who are new to social networking might not know what a hashtag is by name, although they have surely seen them before. Simply put, the tag is a pound sign followed by a word or a very short phrase. It acts something like a keyword, and it is extremely helpful for people who are using Twitter and who are looking for certain topics. Thus, a hashtag might look like this: #blueshoes or #SD5k. They can help to make marketing with your social media much easier.

The Right Tag

One of the first things that you need to do is settle on what hashtags you are going to be using for your marketing. You want to make sure that you choose something that highlights your brand, your offer, or your event. However, you have to make sure that it is not something so common that your competitors are already using it. You should look at hashtags that are similar to the ones that you would like to use, and then find a way to make your tags unique. You could add another word, a location, or even your company name to the first part of the tag to signify it is yours.

You do want to make sure that you are choosing something that is going to be easy to remember though, and you do not want to make it too long. Keep in mind that you only have 140 characters to work with in Twitter, and your hashtags are going to take up some of that room.

Easy to Add Marketing Messages

Your tags are going to be able to go anywhere you would like in your post, so make sure that you use them correctly so they make sense. For example, one of the recent hashtags gaining popularity right now is from the television show Castle. The tag they are using is #savealexis. Something that they might post could be: Will #Castle and Beckett be able to #savealexis?

You can see that this reads like a normal sentence except for the pound signs. Yet, the pound signs are not intrusive at all. It works well as a tweet, and it helps add keywords. They are not wasting any space at all. In fact, they still have room in the tweet to add more, including a call to action. One of the calls to action they added was for people to RT. If they received 1000 RTs, they would give a sneak preview of the next episode.

As you can see, proper utilization of hashtags will give you the ability to market smartly on Twitter. They can be immensely helpful. However, you should keep in mind that you do not want to go overboard on the tags in all of your tweets!
